‘My day has been so unproductive.’
‘I need to improve my time management skills.’
‘There is just too much to get done, some tasks fall through the cracks.’
These are common statements that you may relate to if you struggle with procrastination. Procrastination is much more than the inability to get things done in time. You may ask, “What may be the root cause of procrastination in my life and an effective tool to help me overcome it?”
Question the false narrative
Constant procrastination is a habit, and you may often sabotage yourself even when you know better. This points out the emotional root of procrastination. With this insight, you can begin to view procrastination as a symptom rather than a problem. Take some time to identify the root cause of putting things off by asking deep questions. Also, understand the meaning that you attach to procrastination and avoid self-defeating talk, focusing instead on the positive outcome you would experience getting things done.
Commitment and Rewards
Procrastination leaves you feeling stuck. You need to motivate yourself to prevent this feeling, even for demanding tasks. Commit to breaking down a demanding task into smaller, achievable tasks and milestones., Each time you achieve one of the smaller tasks, reward yourself. Doing this makes it easier to meet challenging demands and less intimidating. Also, you will easily move closer to your ultimate goals.
Offer Compassion
Entrepreneurs and leaders tend to be harder on themselves than any other critics. Self-compassion can help control the negativity and criticism often imposed due to procrastination. Compassion allows you to acknowledge you are struggling and gives the reassurance that you can do your best. Being kind to yourself gives you room to make mistakes, learn from them, continue improving, and keep going.
With these tips, you should no longer worry about putting off a task until you are in ‘the mood’ to get it done. Ensure you have a positive outlook on every job you face. Connecting with an accountability partner at your level will also motivate you to pursue your goals relentlessly.
