“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” — C. S. Lewis
My dreams are constantly evolving, as I achieve goals and realize there is much more to accomplish in the world. Right now, I have a dream to elevate my education. Twenty-six years ago, I received my MBA degree. I used this degree to build up my career, working with Fortune 500 companies in leadership positions. However, I am an individual that never shies away from challenges. That is why I am now pursuing my Doctoral degree – going back to university learning after almost three decades.
When I made this decision, and in my excitement shared with friends and family, I received interesting feedback. Some of the questions I was asked include: –
– Isn’t your current education enough?
– Why do you want to put yourself through this academic rigor and stretch yourself this way for the next four years?
– You are already thriving, why do you need a doctorate degree?
Rather than being brought down by the revelations of others, I gave them this simple answer. “I want to enlarge and strengthen my tent, lengthen my cords and strengthen my stakes.”
My ‘why’ is too strong to allow others who do not understand this journey to deter me from it. The lofty goal that I want to achieve is to contribute to the body of knowledge in Africa. Currently, I am seeking to research how we can develop high-impact entrepreneurs in Africa at scale. There were numerous universities around the globe where I could have taken up this study. I chose to study for my PhD in Africa due to the shortage of knowledge being added and created by Africans in Africa. Yes, this is my new dream.
As you choose to pursue your dream, you may come up against the following barriers: –
– I have so many commitments on my time. How will I do this?
Keep in mind the bigger picture and that you will be contributing to the body of knowledge (especially if your dream is to go back to school). I found inspiration from one of the Fathers of modern philosophy – Augustine of Hippo (354-430). He focused on applying himself to become all that he could ever be while on this earth.
– I am too old to set a lofty goal or a new dream.
My advice – do not allow your current circumstances or age to hold you back from dreaming a new dream. You can create what you desire, despite any challenges and obstacles. Along the way, especially when things get tough, you will ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?”
Just keep in mind that the rewards both during and at the end of the journey will be far greater than the sacrifice and the challenges you will face.
Question: What is that goal or dream you think is too late to start? What is it going to take to begin the journey to fulfill it?
