Four Tips for Improving your Public Speaking and Presentations

‘CEOs think their speaking abilities are better than they really are,’ is the riveting title of an article from the Economist. In my experience interacting with entrepreneurs and C-suite executives, I find this to be true. Public speaking is a skill that you need to develop, as is sharing effective presentations. High achievers understand that public speaking goes beyond writing out loud and includes being able to interact, engage and share note-worthy or quotable comments with the audience.

As a high achiever, you need to know how to fill in pauses as you speak, and how to create effective pauses as well. Simply speaking with an audience is not enough – you must connect with them at a deeper level. The four tips that you can explore to help you improve your public speaking and presentations include: –

1.     It’s all about the audience

Though it may be tempting to make your talk all about you, refrain from doing so. Focus instead on sharing a message that is about your audience. Learn about them, determine what they want to hear and what information they will connect with the most. Choose the right words, tone, and depth of information that will hold their attention.

2.     Put a plan in place

There are many frameworks that you can refer to when planning for public speaking or presentation. One that I find highly effective is storytelling. Begin with a powerful opening, compelling mid-section, and impactful ending. Telling a story holds the attention of your audience from beginning to end., keeping them intrigued and willing to listen to everything you say.

3.     Get your mind right

What are you telling yourself as you prepare to speak or share a presentation? Your words need to be positive, encouraging, and brave. Try positive visualization – picture your speech from beginning to end, with a positive outcome. Visualize the audience laughing at your one-liner, asking engaging questions, and giving you a standing ovation.

4.    Do not worry about making mistakes

You are the only person who knows when you make a mistake. If you do make a mistake, keep going and resist the urge to apologize to your audience. Rather than hearing your fear, your audience should connect to your courage and enthusiasm.

Leave nothing to chance when you are public speaking. Take time out to practice, so that you can have a flawless delivery. This will also help you overcome nerves and anxiety. Do not put pressure on yourself to be perfect, instead, offer your best authentic self.
