What it takes to become a champion

When Patty Berg was asked what did it take to be a champion, she replied “desire, dedication, determination, concentration and the will to win.”  She was an American professional golfer and a leading player on the LPGA Tour during the 1940s -1960s. Her 15 major title wins remains the all-time record for most major wins by a female golfer. She definitely knew what it meant to be a champion!

A living example who appears to have exhibited these characteristics presently is Nigeria’s new President Muhammadu Buhari who after four attempts has now become the new President!

Summer Sanders, a competitive swimmer and multiple Olympic gold medalist in the early 1990s said “ To be a champion, I think you have to see the big picture. It’s not about winning and losing; it’s about every day hard work and about thriving on a challenge. It’s about embracing the pain that you’ll experience at the end of a race and not being afraid. I think people think too hard and get afraid of a certain challenge.”

I could not agree any more with these two champions. The above two quotes inspire and challenge me to aspire to be a champion.  I hope they inspire you too.

Recently, I was a facilitating a strategy and development session for Account and Sales Managers who were faced with seemingly insurmountable sales targets in a very competitive environment.  My preparation led me to the short video I will like to share with you today.

It is a true life story of some young boys in Southern Thailand who faced a bleak future, but through desire, dedication, determination, concentration and the will to win, they became champions of regional football tournaments.  I hope you watch it, get inspired and do let me know what you think.
