Regaining lost momentum

It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.  — Confucius

The long school holidays have long come and gone, and for parents with school aged children, things are getting back to some regular routine. I did not write during these months, not because I did not want to, but because honestly, I lost some of my momentum. The summer months witnessed  a change in my normal daily routine, travel, long school holidays, additional parental responsibilities etc etc.

It has taken me more weeks than I envisaged in getting back to those daily morning routines I just so love to do (after the task is completed), but getting started is always the challenge…This include activities you know and desire to do but just don’t do…morning exercise, creative thinking & reflection etc. Does that usually happen to you? You get started on activities you know are extremely beneficial for you but somehow you just don’t have the discipline to maintain it ….fitness routine, daily prayer and meditation, writing, developing your business plan etc.

Momentum is what keeps you going, keeps you going after your dreams in life.  This is when you can be at your best.  It like when you have successfully pushed up a boulder up the mountain and you are now rolling at the top of the mountain with little effort. You are in your groove.

Losing momentum is then when the boulder rolls back down and you are muscling up energy to push it back up to the mountain top.

Here are some ways that have helped me get back my momentum:

– Consider the next small action step.

This involves not looking intently at all the myriad of actions required to enable you achieve your goal- for example lose 10kg.  Rather ask yourself what can you do tomorrow that will put in track to begin to lose something.  It could be- take a 30 minute walk or have a nutritious breakfast.  Achieve that next thing, cross it off your list and write the next action item.

-Block out the time, get rid of distractions and set a timer.

Put it on your calendar.  Make a date with yourself and your necessary task.  When the time pops up, don’t let yourself reschedule it.  Get your timer set for the amount of time you’ve got blocked out.  Close Facebook, Twitter, and email, and until the timer goes off stay FOCUSED on getting it done.

-Create a plan to stay in motion.

You’ll still have to work your plan, but it’s always easier when you’ve got one.  So create a plan. Forgive yourself when you did not meet your daily plan but always, aim to do better today than you did yesterday.

-Getting an accountability partner

It is amazing the results you can get when you have an accountability partner. An accountability partner is someone who has similar values with you and who you hold yourself accountable to.  I have recently got two great accountability partner with whom we hold ourselves accountable to each other.

QUESTION: What simple action could you take today to produce a new momentum toward success in your life?
